Minutes of IC RICH1 HPD column meeting
Tuesday 3rd October
Present: Bill Cameron, Dave Clark, Richard Plackett, Trevor Savidge, Gabriel Vidal and Dave Websdale
Rungs
- Main CNC machining should be finished by end of the week on all prototype and production rungs.
- A question over whether we want the chamfer at the HV end where cables pass through as the RICH2 pieces. It was decided that we should replicate RICH2 parts as closely as possible and that at least 16 (for the “prototype” columns) should be chamfered as soon as possible in order to be anodized.
U Channels
- Designs ready. Drawings progressing:
- Type A front drawings finalised today.
- Type B front drawings finalised tomorrow.
- Back channels finalised by Thursday.
- Need to use external contractors for production runs, to consider AC precision or NAB (Action GV)
- The prototype channels are to be made in the HEP workshop, too long for CNC machine so will have to be made by hand. This is very time consuming and will take several weeks. DC was asked to start as soon as he has the drawings from TS.
Column End Piece
- These are different from RICH2 rails.
- Made from stock aluminium, although some machining required. Should be possible on CNC machine in house. Possible to do all in house.
- TS to produce drawings by 13th of October.
- All pieces the same.
- Bearings are off-the-shelf items.
- TS to finalise bearings and material and pass details to DC to order (Action TS and DC)
Cooling Plates
- Square copper pipe ordered at the end of August, may be waiting at CERN, but need confirmation. Erich confirmed they have not arrived.
- Copper sheet is at IC and needs cutting. Not necessary to do now, although has to be done in main workshop that may be out of action in the new year.
- Drawings of honeycomb needs to be completed at least two weeks away.
- DC will look for supplier of the Loctite glue used by the Genova technicians.
- BC to drive pipe bender back from CERN for prototype.
- We believe it is not necessary to put in oven the two prototypes (we believe it just speeds up curing)
- Again prototypes will be made here. Production will be at CERN by Genova technicians, however they require:
- copper sheet to be cup
- Al spacers to be cut to length
- honeycomb pieces cut to size and shape
- over length copper pipe
- inlet and outlet valves
- glue
- Plates not necessary for prototype column dressing, although would be nice.
Cooling Manifold
- Design to be addressed in two weeks time.
- Need to think about volume of the manifold and interfaces to connectors and the skin of the cover.
- Default connectors (Legris valves) used on RICH2 t be baseline, although they are quite long and should be supported separately of the pipe.
Workshop Time
- Lots of work (Especially CNC) identified, and will probably tie up the workshop for rest of year... Question of priorities with other jobs arose.
- Prototype parts are a priority.
- Need to minimise dead time, especially on CNC machine
- As much production work to be outsourced as possible to reduce workload.
- The more drawings the workshop have in advance the better as it allows better planning and preparation.
