MINUTES OF RICH1 HPD COLUMN MEETING
Monday 9th October 06
Present: Bill Cameron, Dave Clark, Richard Plackett, Trevor Savidge, Gabriel Vidal and Dave Websdale
HPD Columns
- Rungs:
- Manufacture for all production (128 units) finished
- The chamfer discussed at the last meeting has been made to all of them
- They are ready to be anodized (see anodization)
- U Channels
- Drawings of "HPD side" already at the workshop
- Drawings of "back channels" will be handed to the workshop today
- Work to produce two columns (one of each type) started on Thursday 5th. This is one off of each U channel drawing.
- The work is being done manually and is expected to be finished by Friday 13th. Probably by Wednesday 11th.
- They will be anodized together with the rungs (see anodization)
- Production of the rest 28 units (7 of each drawing) will be done outside after prototypes have been tested. Candidates NAB or AC Precision.
- AC Precision quotation: ~£73 for HPD side channel and ~£56 for the "back channels". They quota a lead time of 20 days but no delivery time. The company has been asked for delivery time and whether they can anodize them as well. They have also been asked for confirmation that they understand that we procure the material.
- We will have a quote from NAB on Tuesday 10th.
- End rungs/Extraction mechanism.
- Design is ready for the prototypes. Height of bearings might change for final production.
- AGIS file for CNC machine will be handed to the workshop on Wednesday 11th morning.
- Material was ordered on Thursday 5th and should arrive by Wednesday 11th.
- 6 pieces will be produced for:
- the two column prototypes that will be shipped to CERN
- one column prototype made of not-machined U channels to test the extraction mechanism.
- 8 bearings from RS ordered and arrived. Other 4 have to be ordered: action for Dave C. All bearings will be eventually bought off the shelf, they will not be manufactured in the workshop.
- 3 m length of 20 mm diameter Stainless Steel rod ordered.
- Anodizing
- we will use Morden Platers
- all prototype parts (rungs, U channels and end rungs) plus all the production rungs to be done together
- Samples will be taken there this week to get an offer
- Screws, Nuts and Bolts
- Only standard sizes will be used.
- Action on TS and DC to get them.
Cooling plates
- Update from last meeting: copper pipe not yet at CERN
- Glue Sourced but company not on the college directory
- DW will buy with credit card to speed delivery. Action: DW and DC.
- Need to retrieve 6 inlet valves from CERN
- GV to check delivery times of Legris connectors
- Honeycomb: as said in the last meeting Trevor will resume the design of the manifold in the week of the 16th of October. After the manifold the design of the honeycomb should be straight forward. Our target is to have the drawings by Friday 27th of October. Honeycomb delivery time is 3 weeks.
Patch panels
- Nothing to report
- Discussion about material arose. Candidates are aluminium and plastic. Almost no difference in manufacture.
- Action on Richard: complete the table of connectors with info on how do they provide gas and light tightness.
Photon funnel
- Compliance test:
- tested rubber sheet between two centered frames
- with 20mm band of rubber between frames, the not-supported frames sags 5mm under its own weight. By putting 8 Kg of weight onto each corner of the frame it stretches another 2 mm. No difference observed with the frames supported at 30 degrees angle. Conclusion: +- 8mm compliance easily achievable.
- Test with 40mm band of rubber scheduled for this week
- The same manufacture is proposed for the final system: first clamp the rubber rectangle and then cut it.
HPD Planes installation
GV to email Rohan and delay meeting as no progress on HPD frame
